Dettifoss waterfall is the most powerful waterfall in Europe, it is fed by the powerful glacier river Jökulsá á Fjöllum which flows from the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull. This thunderous falls has an average waterflow of 193 meters cubed per second (6,186 cubic feet). It is 100 meters (330 feet) wide and plummets 45 meters (150 feet) down into Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. Nearby are two other beautiful waterfalls worth seeing called Selfoss and Hafragilsfoss. Dettifoss waterfall was featured in the film Prometheus.
Parking: You can view Dettifoss from each side of the river but you’ll have to drive and walk quite a bit to get to each viewpoint. West side: The main side – Paved road from Route 1 – 800 m (0,5 mile) walk to the waterfall. East side: Gravel road to the parking lot – 400 m (1300 ft) walk to the waterfall down a steep rock trail.
