The Diamond Beach is part of Breiðamerkursandur outwash planes, also known as Fellsfjara. Depending on which side of Jökulsá glacier river you are at it’s either called Eystri-Fellsfjara (East side) or Vestri-Fellsfjara (Westside). This beach is an 18km long black sand beach covered in icebergs that have been washed into the sea from Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon where they are polished by the Atlantic waves before being washed back ashore.
This beautiful display makes it a must-see location for photographers and nature-lovers. Wildlife enthusiasts can often see seals swimming around, and it is one of the best places in the country to see Orcas from the shore.
This place is a part of Vatnajökull national park which is protected and you must apply for a permit about 14 days before visiting. Unless you are doing this for commercial purposes, research, or for a movie, then it is 30 days prior. If you don’t have a permit with you and a national park ranger catches you, you’ll get a very high fine.
