Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is one of Iceland’s most popular attractions and no wonder. This stunning lagoon is a true natural jewel with its unique icebergs floating around and scenic view over Vatnajökull Glacier. It is 248 meters (814 ft) deep which makes it Iceland’s deepest lake. The icebergs in Jökulsárlón are composed of over 1000 years old ice that has broken away from the glacier. After falling into the lagoon it then slowly melts and drifts out to sea, where they are polished by the Atlantic waves before being washed back ashore on the beautiful black beach nearby. This is the reason why the sand is, therefore, always covered in beautiful icebergs that remind you of diamonds – hence the name Diamond beach. If you’re lucky you can see a number of seals swimming around.
There are a few movies that have been shot at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon:
– A view to a kill (1985)
– Die another day (2002)
– Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)
Tours: Boat tours are available, they cost around 6000 ISK per person. This is also the starting point of multiple different glacier tours (nearby you’ll find some of Iceland’s most stunning blue Ice caves).
This place is a part of Vatnajökull national park which is protected and you must apply for a permit about 14 days before visiting. Unless you are doing this for commercial purposes, research, or for a movie, then it is 30 days prior. If you don’t have a permit with you and a national park ranger catches you, you’ll get a very high fine.
