Kvernufoss waterfall is more remote than other locations on the South coast. It’s hidden away in a beautiful gorge and often overlooked by both locals and tourists. What makes this 30 m (98 ft) tall waterfall special is that you can walk behind it which gives you a completely different view over the mystical gorge. Be sure to bring waterproof clothing, you will get very wet! To get there, park behind the Skógar museum. From there, you can see a small lake located near a small cabin, a little more east of the Skógar museum, following the stream up to the waterfall. It’s a 15-20 min (600 m / 1970 ft) hike with some tricky parts but it’s a simple and beautiful trail. Drones are allowed but watch out, it’s a very narrow gorge.
Camera tip: bring a wide lens to photograph the waterfall behind it.
