One of the most stunning and most hidden location in this South coast, it’s literally like you are stepping into Jurassic park. It has two incredibly stunning waterfalls called Hangandifoss (123 meters tall), which is closer to the main view point and is one of Iceland’s tallest waterfalls (the tallest being 240 meters). The other waterfall is called Múlafoss (101 meters tall) and it’s all the way in the opposite end of the canyon, right in the center of the canyon.
Múlagljúfur is situated about 5 km from Fjallsárlón glacier lagoon and 15 km west from the famous Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. It’s pretty hard to find the parking from where you will start your hike but to get to it you need to turn onto a graveled road and drive for around 5-7 minutes until you get to the parking spot. From the parking lot the hike is about 2 km or 45 minute towards the canyon. With photo stops and hiking back and forth, it’s about 3-4 hours, depending on your pace.
This place is a part of Vatnajökull national park which is protected and you must apply for a permit about 14 days before visiting. Unless your are doing this for commercial purposes, research or for a movie, then it is 30 days prior. If you don’t have a permit with you and a national park ranger catches you, you’ll get a very high fine.
