Selfoss is located on the south coast and it’s the town that basically marks the start/end of the south coast, depending on the direction you’re coming from. It has about 9000 inhabitants (2021), making it the most populated town in the south of Iceland. It’s about an hour from Reykjavík (57km/35miles) and 1 hour 40 minutes from Vík (130km/80miles). The river running beside Selfoss is called Ölfusá and it’s the most voluminous river in Iceland with an average discharge of 423 m³/s. The town started to develop in 1891 and received its municipal rights in 1978. The surrounding sites around Selfoss are endless and it’s the start of many day tours on the south coast.
