Skógafoss is probably the most famous waterfall in Iceland and has appeared in multiple movies and TV series like “Thor ”, “Game Of Thrones“ and ”Vikings “. This majestic waterfall is 25 m (82 ft) wide and drops 60 m (196 ft) down which makes it one of the biggest in the country. Legend has it that a Viking settler named Thrasi Thórólfsson hid a huge treasure chest behind the waterfall around the year 900 and nobody has been able to retrieve it. Some say they can see the chest when there’s a double rainbow surrounding the waterfall. We recommend walking up to the top of the waterfall and seeing it from above. That is the start of one of the most famous hiking routes in Iceland “Fimmvörðuháls pass” which is a 22 km (14 miles) long trail famed for beautiful waterfalls and glacier sights. Due to the mist the waterfall consistently produces you’ll be able to witness a single, or a double rainbow on sunny days. Be sure to bring waterproof clothing since the mist is also likely to leave you soaked after your visit. Drones are not allowed here.
If you’re interested in museums, Skógar folk museum is one of the biggest and most popular museums in Iceland. It has a cultural heritage collection of more than 18,000 regional folk craft artifacts exhibited in 3 museums and 6 historical buildings and examples of many periods of Icelandic architectural history. Definitely worth a visit.
