Þakgil (Thakgil) is one of the most beautiful campsites in Iceland and a true hidden gem. The name “Þakgil” comes from þak meaning roof and gil meaning canyon. As the name suggests the weather is usually very good there, often protected by the surrounding mountains from heavy winds. On-site, there are a lot of beautiful hiking routes fit for everyone. Camping sites, cottages, bathrooms, and showers are available. The dining room is a naturally formed cave, and in it, there is a grill and a fireplace. Its neighboring canyon, Remundargil canyon, is even more majestic. It is only a short driving distance away from Þakgil and there is a stunning waterfall there called Remundargilsfoss that takes around 30 minutes to get to by foot each way from the parking spot. The hike into the canyon is pretty challenging in the start but gets easier, but there are some tricky parts where you have to climb some rocks.
To get to Þakgil you must turn left from road nr.1 by Höfðabrekkuvegur road, 5 km east of Vík by Hotel Katla. Then follow Kerlingardalsvegur road for 30-40 minutes and you will find a sign that points to Þakgil camping site. You don’t need a 4×4 to reach Þakgil but it is recommended in the winter. Drones are allowed.
